The Galaxy Gear was praised for its beautiful display, surprising camera quality and industrial design, but was universally criticized for its relatively poor notification management—an issue that we predicted would be remedied with a software update. The update we were hoping for is now here in the form of a Gear Manager update that is rolling out along with Gear build V700XXUAMK7. As you can see below, Gmail and Google Hangouts actually display content in the notification displayed on the Galaxy Gear.
The newly updated Gear Manager allows users to select which apps send notifications to the watch. Whether it’s texts and emails, or social media, you can individually toggle each app’s ability to show notification on your Galaxy Gear—of course, you will still have the option to view the notification on your phone.
The Galaxy Gear still has a long way to go before it can be considered an essential accessory, but Samsung’s due diligence and commitment are promising. This will be the first of many steps to refine the smart watch into an everyman item but until then, go download the Gear Manager update in the Samsung Apps store.
