Samsung Exclusive App Review: RSS Times reader for Windows Phone 7 Mango

If you are excited for the latest build of Windows Phone 7, Mango, we have a sneak peek at one of the new pre-installed apps for Samsung WP7 devices—RSS Times:

RSS Times main menu: Menu button at bottom right, Pull down feed list at top right

RSS Times is a lightweight, news reader application for Windows Phone 7 devices that organizes your RSS feeds into a simple and easy to read format. RSS Times formats your RSS feed into a paginated UI that allows you to swipe horizontally to flip through all of your feed rather than having to use multiple gestures such as scrolling and pinch-to-zoom in order to read content.

In subscription view, up to 4 articles can be previewed, with longer posts taking up 2 slots

One of my favorite parts about RSS Times is the simple UI that makes it easy to add and remove subscriptions from the homescreen. When you open the application, you will be greeted with a newstand with 6 spots for individual subscriptions and categories. To add feeds, select the appropriate spot on the newstand and select a subscription from your reader feed. To remove a subscription, hit the trashcan at the bottom right of the main menu and it will being up an “x” button on the subscription panes.

As I mentioned earlier, one of RSS Times’ unique features is its magazine format, that converts vertically scrolling feeds into paginated versions that mimic flipping through the pages of a newspaper or magazine. In addition, the application themes each article for a visually pleasing UI that further streamlines the magazine-like experience.

Click on the globe icon to view the web version of the article

By clicking on the content you can activate the dropdown toolbar seen in the above image that allows you to easily share what you are reading with friends via Twitter, Facebook and Email. Let’s take a quick recap of all of RSS Times’ features:

  • Lightweight and easy to navigate user interface
  • 1 motion navigation via paginated view
  • Reader friendly themes
  • Add subscriptions via Google Reader
  • Up to 6 subscriptions on the home screen
  • Twitter, Facebook and Email share buttons
